So we recently purchased a Dell Mini 9″ running Ubuntu. I believe it runs 8.04 Hardy, but as our main technician stole it, I have not yet played with it. And I jest, as he wanted to give the Dell mini a trial. In our school system, two of our elementary schools bought into the eeePC craze, running the stock Xandros that comes on them. While our staff does not have the Linux background, they embraced these laptops, and we could set them up to use our access points with little difficulties. Now, at our new elementary school, where each grade level has a class set, we are trying to figure out how to set them up for a network printer.

With the Dell minis, after finding how to connect the Ubuntu to Active Directory, our staff appears like they would like to keep Ubuntu on them (win!). I would also like to see us investigate the 12″ (I think) minis for our middle and high schools. While I think the 9″ laptops are great for elementary aged students, they really would not hold up to the constant abuse that middle and high schoolers would give them. I hope that Dell quickly sells them with Ubuntu, as they are only offering them with XP for now. I also do not like their memory, as the 12″ are regular hard drives, and not the flash memory of the 9″.

BUT WE”RE USING LINUX! And after only three months on the job!
