When will they learn, I ask? When will any of these proprietary companies learn? Apparently Microsoft’s new motion sensor Kinect for their X-Box system is their crown jewel, to compete directly with Nintendo’s Wii. Well, what do smaller companies try to do with a new piece of hardware? Reverse engineer it to make drivers of their own for alternative reasons. Maybe to use it with the XBMC perhaps.
So a company, Adafruit Industries (best name of the YEAR!) decided to put a $2,000.00 bounty for anyone to create an open source driver. Really, at that point, why would Microsoft care? I guess they worry that someone, Adafruit perhaps, will create their own peripheral to compete against Kinect. And if so, isn’t competition good? We have seen what happens when Microsoft creates monopolies. But the best part of the entire story? Microsoft pouted, and Adafruit goes, ‘Don’t make us put the bounty up to $3,000.” GREAT! I can definitely see the OSS community pulling behind Adafruit and kicking in even more money.
