In our school system, we recently provided training to our sixth grade teachers for the new Dell Latitude 2100s and Dell carts we purchased. Each of our three middle schools will receive a cart with 20 laptops, a document camera, and an LCD projector. Sort of designed as a ready to go, ’21st century cart.’ What throughly impressed us was that each school bought additional laptops for the cart. Great to see that buy-in! Our tech department purchased the equipment with our Enhancing Education Through Technology/American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (EETT/ARRA) stimulus funds. We also used 25% of the funds for professional development, which included sub pay for teachers to come out and learn about the netbooks and will allow some of the teachers to participated in extended training focusing on Bloom’s Taxonomy and additional good classroom practices.
We will revisit this topic soon, to share what open source apps we used on the Latitudes, and why we choose them. We wanted to create a highly functional machine that would allow us to tweak some settings and also keep the cost down. More to come!
