I LOVE this story! This really captures this blog and my thoughts on Open Source, media, Creative Commons, and where I think we should go with media. It seems a creative artist decided to download 5 million dollars worth of illegally acquired music to a 1 terabyte hard drive and put it on display.
I may go beyond the artist’s interpretation, but I see this also as a warning of what is happening in society. So much value given to these bits. So much time, and the inability to mix, mash, and use how we want. We don’t even buy the music, we use it, or hold it for awhile. And then to create additional art using it, or even the idea of it (*ahem, overblown patents, ahem*), people go to jail or pay extortion payments to the RIAA, MPAA, and other groups
This just represents another HUGE problem in society. We need to provide content to our students to prepare them as the next generation of creative entrepreneurs. Will that happen as things exist? When you provide a Copyright term of a creator’s life plus 90 some odd years. And then you continue to add more time. Really? Only when you can provide common sense policies will you change it. When you let the big dogs like Disney dictate laws, you face the mess we’re in.
